Heat Pump Installation in Christchurch
We fit heat pumps that actually warm your place through a Canterbury winter, sized to the room and installed tidy. Get a straight quote for your home.
Heat pump installation in Christchurch means sizing the unit to your room and how leaky the house is, then fitting it so it starts cleanly on a frosty morning. A right-sized, tidy install beats a big-name or bargain unit every time. We quote per home, not off a price list.
What a good heat pump install actually looks like
The unit on the wall is only half the job. What keeps you warm is getting the capacity right, mounting the indoor and outdoor units in sensible spots, and running the pipework and drain cleanly so nothing leaks or rattles.
Christchurch throws hard frosts and cold-start mornings at a heat pump, so the outdoor unit has to defrost well and still push heat when it's near zero outside. An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite gets there. An oversized one short-cycles and costs you more to run. We'd rather size it properly than sell you more grunt than you need.
Sizing it for your home, not just the room
Two rooms the same size can need different units. A leaky older single-glazed villa in Shirley or Sydenham loses heat fast, so it needs more capacity than a tight modern rebuild in Burnside with double glazing and good insulation. Suburbs down on the river flats and in the valleys, where cold air settles overnight, ask a bit more of the unit again.
That's why we measure the room, ask about glazing, insulation and which way it faces before we quote. You can get a rough idea yourself with our heat pump sizing calculator, then we confirm it on site so you're not guessing.
Choosing the right unit for the job
Most Christchurch homes do well with a single high-wall unit in the main living area. If you want to warm a whole house evenly, or you'd rather not see a unit on every wall, ducted heat pump systems are worth a look. There's more than one way to do it, so it's worth understanding the types of heat pump before you settle.
Brand matters less than sizing and install, but it does matter for cold-start reliability and parts down the track. We fit Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps a lot because they handle Canterbury frosts well, and we'll tell you honestly if a cheaper option suits your room just as well.
Supply and install, and what it costs
We supply and install as one job, so you get a single quote covering the unit, brackets, pipework, electrical and the tidy-up. No surprise add-ons after the fact.
Prices depend on the unit, how far the pipe run is and how easy the wall and outdoor spot are to reach. We break it all down on our installation cost page so you can see what drives the number. If you're on a low income or hold a Community Services Card, the Warmer Kiwi Homes grant can cover a chunk of a first heat pump. That's run by EECA and you apply through them; we can't sign you up, but we can fit the unit if you qualify.
- The heat pump, sized to your room
- Wall brackets and outdoor mount
- Insulated pipework and condensate drain
- Electrical connection and testing
- A clean tidy-up before we leave
Standing behind the install
Once it's on the wall, a heat pump needs a wash and a check now and then to keep running efficiently through the frosts. We look after the units we install with regular heat pump servicing, and to keep that straight we only service and repair heat pumps we fitted ourselves. That way we know exactly how it was set up and what's behind the wall.
So when we install for you, we're the ones you call later. No passing the buck, no arguing over whose fault a fault is.

Common questions about heat pump installation
How long does it take to install a heat pump?
Most single high-wall installs take three to five hours in a day. If the pipe run is long, the wall is tricky, or we're fitting more than one unit, it can stretch out, but we'll usually have you warm the same day. We'll give you a realistic time when we quote.
Where should a heat pump be installed in the house?
The indoor unit goes high on a wall in the room you use most, usually the living area, clear of furniture and blowing across the space rather than straight at you. The outdoor unit sits outside on a wall bracket or ground stand with airflow around it. We work out the best spots on site so pipework stays short and the drain runs away cleanly.
Do I need consent to install a heat pump in Christchurch?
You don't need building consent for a standard high-wall heat pump in Christchurch. The electrical work has to be done to code and signed off, which we handle as part of the install. If you're in a heritage-listed home or there are body corporate rules, check those first, but for most homes it's a straight fit.
